This past month, Pulse Design Studio was chosen as one of twelve design companies to ‘pitch’ to a group of local decision makers responsible for hiring talent for their creative business needs. The event was held at dPOP! in the Chrysler House in Detroit, sponsored by Pure Michigan Business Connect, Detroit Creative Corridor Center, Michigan Film and Digital Media Office, and the Detroit Crain Content Studio.

Each company was given a limit of 3:00 minutes of total presentation time using no more than a total of 10 slides to present with. For a Presentation company like ourselves, this venue was a chance to put our talents to the test not only behind, but also in front of the screen.

So when it comes to giving a presentation- what’s more effective to deliver the message? Is it the slides or the speaker?

This question came up during the event, and it’s definitely a popular one to ponder, no matter what size presentation or event one is preparing for- and also regardless of time or number of slides you have. And it’s one that we happen to work with our clients to answer all the time.

Our answer boils down to this: ‘Deliver a great ‘story’. This is the primary and universal foundation that will engage and resonate with your audience beyond anything else. But what exactly does that mean?

During our presentation, we included a slide to speak to this universal truth. Understanding the value of how to tell a great story in order to sell your product, or pitch your business to a room full of key decision makers is becoming an increasingly important element for all business types. Why? Because time (as in our 3:00 minute limit) is the driver on getting to the essence of what you’re saying to your audience. So getting to the point, is well, the point- and the most essential ingredient for your presentation. And as in Crain’s Detroit Business Articlewritten about the event itself, Daniel Duggan mentions:

“…I asked a few people, informally, afterward about what pitches they liked best. The ones that rose to the top were those who were talking more about the big picture and making the pitch more about telling a story”.

Becoming a leading, expert presentation design agency in the world of telling stories effectively is how Pulse Design Studio has risen on a global scale with the products we produce for our clients. And it’s through our presentation design specialties, that we’ve been able to win clients hundreds of millions of dollars in new business. In this photo below, we demonstrated our approach to the elements that we integrate into presentation slides to tell an effective story:

So, next time you find yourself in a position to present, start with what your ‘story’ is, rather than the ‘copy’ or script- and then, map it out to the amount of time you’re facing the audience with. You’ll find yourself delivering a much more effective presentation to your audience, and most importantly one that they’ll tend to remember most.
